As per usual Hollywood has been following itself in a recent trend of fairy tale movies: Red Riding Hood, Mirror, Mirror, Snow White and the Huntsman, and now Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
I actually kind of dig the concept: a grown up Hansel and Gretel hunt down witches like the one that tried to cook them and eat them. Makes sense.
But I'm getting a real Van Helsing kind of vibe from this film. In short, it looks kind of stupid. Why do grown up German children have American accents (and Gemma Arterton is British!)? Why does Hansel have shotguns when this movie clearly takes place years before they were invented? Why would rising star Jeremy Renner agree to this movie?
Maybe I'm wrong, but this trailer is not instilling me with a lot of confidence.
