Charity of the Month: Save Karl's Comics

I've been thinking lately about how the internet can be a force for good in the world.

Of course there are tons of vile things to be found there as well.  I'm reminded of a line from the show Scrubs, where Dr. Cox said, "There's only 2 things I know: if they took down all the porn from the internet there would be exactly 1 website, and it would be called "Bring-back-the-porn.com" (the second thing is irrelevant).

But despite the potential for wickedness, I think we can tap into this massive communication and information tool to help each other.

To that end, a new feature on CatholicSkywalker will be the Charity of the Month.

Each month I will choose a charity to highlight for all of my readers and invite them to contribute.  I only ask, I don't insist.  I know that money is tight and that there are many other worth charities to which you probably contribute.

And I will never ask of anything I am not willing to do myself.  Each charity chosen will be one to which I have already given.

This month it's SAVE KARL'S COMICS.

Karl Kessel is a well-known comic book writer.  He has written some truly wonderful stories.

He and his wife Myrna have just adopted an infant who is addicted to heroin.  The adoption and medical expenses have hit them fairly hard.  So Karl has manned up and resolved to sell his lifelong comic book collection.

I respect this so much.  He is putting his child ahead of himself.

SAVE KARL'S COMICS is an attempt to raise money to cover the adoption and medical costs so that he doesn't have to sell.  Karl did not start this fund.  A fan wanted to help out.

There are larger charities out there that help more people.  But what is great about this is that if a lot of people give a little, it can make a big difference to this family.

There are a lot of couples out there that adopt troubled children without much help.  But that shouldn't stop us from helping at least one when we can.

Thank you in advance for your generosity.
