COMMUNITY
When I originally wrote this, Community was on hiatus and its future fate on NBC was uncertain. This was a real shame because Community is the funniest, most original show on television today. One of the joys of the show is that you have no idea what you are going to get from week to week. I know that last season, some people were tired of the genre episodes (e.g. a zombie episode, a documentary episode, a claymation episode), but that is part of the shows great charm. Not many shows can transcend so many types and genres, while at the same time still ringing true to the show's silly-sweet tone. As wonderful as other shows are, like last year's winner “Modern Family,” you will get the same type of style and situation from week to week. Someone I know recently called this show a “live-action Simpsons,” which I think is high praise indeed. But the silliness is grounded (though not in anything that is close to reality), in the relationships between the 7 main characters who would normally not have anything to do with each other except that they need each other to survive Greendale Community College.
