Thanks to my brother-in-law, Mr. Pink, for the idea for this blog post.
My last Sunday Best post was about the best Christmas movies. But there are a number of movies that take place during Christmas but are not, technically, about Christmas.
Here are the best movies in that category:
DIE HARD
One of the greatest action movies of all time that feels almost like a holiday tradition. The subtle spreading of Christmas imagery and music, like the jingle bells when John sees the wrapping paper, give the movie such a nice, memorable texture.
GREMLINS
This is such an odd movie that is a combination horror movie/ comedy/ children's film. But the small-town, Christmas setting makes a wonderful juxtaposition to the insane violence on screen.
WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING
One of the nicest romantic comedies of all time ties in to the Christmas and New Year's season in such a beautiful and simply heartfelt way.
THE APARTMENT
Billy Wilder makes this amazing dramedy about two lonely people during the holidays who fall into each other's lives while everyone else appears happy.
AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER
This is a movie where Christmas ties the whole story together at the end and leads to the final dialogue that resolves the whole story into one of the most powerful romantic bows ever seen on screen.
BETTER OFF DEAD
The Christmas scene in this movie always makes me laugh, especially when they see the neighbor's present. A great send up of all things suburban.
STALAG 17
While it takes place in a frozen German POW camp, the moments of Christmas cheer help make this tense comedy/thriller enjoyable.
