2017 Summer Movie Review
Summer Movie Season has come and gone once again. And what is our conclusion?
Most people point to it as a disappointment, at least financially. But there were a handful of films that I truly enjoyed and cannot wait to own in my personal collection.
Most people point to it as a disappointment, at least financially. But there were a handful of films that I truly enjoyed and cannot wait to own in my personal collection.
Before I go further, there were a number of movies that I did not get a chance to see, so I cannot speak intelligently about them. These include:
King Arthur
Snatched
Alien Covenant
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
Captain Underpants
My Cousin Rachel
All Eyez on Me
Cars 3
The Book of Henry
Rough Night
Wish Upon
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
An Inconvenient Sequel
The Dark Tower
Detroit
Ingrid Goes West
In terms of box office, the top 10 highest grossing films of the summer are:
1. Wonder Woman

My predictions were as follows (along with my rationale):
My predictions were as follows (along with my rationale):
1. Despicable Me 3
I am not the biggest fan of this franchise. It doesn't hold the same place in my heart as Toy Story. But little kids love Gru and the Minions. The Minions movie alone grossed over $300 million. And the plot for this one actually looks more interesting than what has come before. Little kids will beg their parents to take them to see this film and the theaters will be packed.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
This will be the biggest non-children's movie of the summer. The first Guardians was a surprise, but this one has a much higher anticipation and a ubiquitous marketing campaign.
3. Transformers: The Last Knight
This feels like a critic-proof franchise. Every one of these films has been savaged by critics and yet audiences flock to the Bayhem.
4. Spider-Man: Homecoming
As someone pointed out on Screen Junkies, every successive Spider-Man film has made less money than the one before. But the advertising for this is so heavy with Iron Man that it may give this film a boost.
5. Wonder Woman
For people who don't know anything about comics, the name "Wonder Woman" is still very familiar. That recognition alone is a huge draw. On top of that the trailers have been really, really good and should bring people in.
6. The Mummy
Tom Cruise is one of the few remaining movie stars, meaning someone who can open a movie to larger numbers because of his name. I would not have thought much of this film, except the trailer looked very exciting. It surprises me how much I have enjoyed his last few action-movie outings. And I think audiences will be drawn to the familiar title and familiar star.
This is one of my gambles. Nolan has never made a bad movie. And there is a bit of counter-programing here. As it said in Nolan's Inception, "People yearn for catharsis." Even amid all the explosions of the Summer Movie Season, there is room for a movie that pulls at the heartstrings. I'm hoping this is it.
10. Baywatch
This is my dark horse because it is R-Rated and that limits box office. But Deadpool proved that audiences will flock to raunch if it is really original and funny. And Dwayne Johnson is also one of the few movie stars left. His mediocre outing from last Summer, Central Intelligence, was the 9th highest grossing movie of the season.
So as you can see, I got 8 of the top 10, although the order is all off. This is a bigger improvement for me than last year where I got 6 of the top 10.
WINNERS

7. Cars 3
While the second Cars movie did about $50 million less than the original, the trailers for this movie have marketed it with more of the traditional PIXAR heart. We'll see if that has enough to draw more people in.
8. War for the Planet of the Apes
Again, name recognition is important and the fact that most people who saw the last one, including myself, greatly enjoyed it. Good word of mouth could help this movie along too.

WINNERS
1. Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman did much better than I anticipated, which makes me very happy for the DCEU. This is a movie that I saw twice in the theaters and will buy the day it comes out on Blu-Ray. I think it deserves a high place in the pantheon of super hero films for the No Man's Land scene alone. No DCEU has won the summer box office yet, so I hedged my bets on this one. Director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot, and the entire cast and crew, should be commended.
2. Comic Book Movies
Both Marvel movies performed very well. I know that there has been a lot of digital ink spilled about how the comic book movie fad is coming to an end, but all three of the top summer movies were super hero stories.
3. Minions
Even though I thought it was going to be number one, Despicable Me 3 was the fourth highest grosser. What this says to me is that since the minions were underemphasized, there was less appeal for the little kids to drag their parents. We'll see if a Minions sequel outperforms DM3
4. Christopher Nolan
Dunkirk is almost like an experimental film rather than a narrative film. Any major stars it has are obscured by the bleakness of the story. And the movie didn't try to pull at the heartstrings with majestic and noble swells of emotion. Despite that, Christopher Nolan's movie was three spots higher in box office placement than I predicted. I think much of this is due to the good will that Nolan has built up with his fans who expect quality.
5. Pirates
I did not think that the 5th installment of the Pirates franchise would crack the top 10. But not only did it make it high on the list, it tripled its gross in the international market. I am actually happy for this series because this film, while not the best, is an improvement from the last outing.
LOSERS
1. General Box Office
In total, this summer brought in less money than last summer. And there is a sharp decline in the top 4 and the bottom six. Despicable Me 3 earned $252 million and the next highest grosser, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales earned $80 million dollars less. The bottom of the top ten, Girls Trip, barely crossed the $100 million mark.

2. Tom Cruise and the Dark Universe
I personally enjoyed The Mummy, but it did not resonate with fans. Universal put the cart before the horse and set up this film to be the beginning of a Universal monster cinematic universe. Even with the star power of Tom Cruise, this film couldn't make $80 million domestic (though it did make $327 million in the foreign markets).
3. Raunchy Comedies
While Girls Trip did crack the top ten, the other three big raunch comedies that were more heavily promoted, (Snatched, Baywatch and Rough Night) all crashed and burned. Even big stars like Dwayne Johnson and Scarlett Johannson could save these films.
4. Transformers and Alien Franchise
While it made it into the top 10, it is clear that this franchise is losing steam. They've always had poor writing, but the spectacle was always able to make up for it to make them, at the least, entertaining. Not so anymore. Can it be turned around? Who knows.
But I'm going to call it on the Alien franchise. As long as Ridley Scott is interested in exploring the world in ways that are too tired, then no one will want to see these films. If only they would do the Aliens sequel that Neil Blondkamp was developing...

I'll be finishing up my summer movie reviews soon, but there was a lot of hit or miss this year.
I'll be finishing up my summer movie reviews soon, but there was a lot of hit or miss this year.
Here's the thing: I want to go to the movies. I am willing to spend my hard-earned dollars to be taken away inside of a darkened theater. But if you don't give me a good quality, I will save my money and binge-watch Stranger Things Season 2.
I am hoping that next summer will have a lot more to write home about.
But in terms of ranking by quality, here are the rankings of the summer movies I saw in 2017.
Wonder Woman
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Dunkirk
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
War for the Planet of the Apes
The Mummy
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Baby Driver
The Hitman's Bodyguard
The Emoji Movie
Atomic Blonde
