Monday Poetry: Mock on, Mock on, Voltaire, Rousseau

I just heard this poem in a movie, so I looked it up and found that I liked it very much.

Now that I have been following the Pope on twitter, I got into the bad habit of reading the replies to his tweets.  Most of them are full of venom and mocking.

What I like about this poem by William Blake is that it reminds me that all of the mocking of those who stand against the Lord will be put to silence.  In the end God will have His due glory and those who mock him will blush at it.

Mock on, Mock on, Voltaire, Rousseau

Mock on, mock on, Voltaire, Rousseau;
Mock on, mock on; 'tis all in vain!
You throw the sand against the wind,
And the wind blows it back again.
And every sand becomes a gem
Reflected in the beams divine;
Blown back they blind the mocking eye,
But still in Israel's paths they shine.

The Atoms of Democritus
And Newton's Particles of Light
Are sands upon the Red Sea shore,
Where Israel's tents do shine so bright.
