Sunday Best: Supporting Actor 2009

Jackie Earle Haley – Watchmen

Even though he spends much of the film with is face and eyes completely covered, Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach delivers one of the most powerful performances of the year. So much of what he does is accomplished without the actors most powerful tools: facial expressions. But Haley fills Rorschach with hundreds of little ticks in body language and voice in inflection that he paints one of the most vivid characters in the entire piece. We root for Rorschach even though his is, technically speaking, a sociopath. He is someone who has seen the worst hell imaginable in his life, and those abuses have not strengthened his character, they have damaged him irrevocably. But he is pushing forward has best he can. When Haley does get a chance to uses his face, it is done with devastating effect. His last scene in the movie gives me chills because he unleashes all of his skills to bring his character to one final devastating point.
