There's a line from Good Will
Hunting where Robin Williams' therapist character describes his
wife by saying she was someone who “could level you with her eyes.”
This description is very apropos of Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Ramona
Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. As a character,
Ramona actually gives very little with which an actress can work.
She is aloof, sarcastic, and can be downright mean. But Winstead
uses this a tool to make Ramona alluring to Scott, and therefore the
audience. When she roles her eyes with disgust or sharply cuts him
off with a verbal dismissal, it stings. But rather than running
away, it makes Scott desire her approval even more. When he makes
her smile with his music, it is a smile that is earned with great
effort. Winstead makes that smile rewarding. She hints at hidden
depths to her that we can only know if we get closer. Every look she
gives can enrage, devastate, or delight.
