Joss Whedon Returning for Avengers 2

Joss Whedon has signed on to return as writer/director for the Avengers sequel.  This makes sense considering not only did he turn in the best written script of the year and direct the highest grossing film of the summer, but he also set up the story for the second part.

I would be really interested if Whedon had an entire trilogy mapped out in his head that he plans to see through until the end.

My only concern is that the longer his series go on, the darker they get.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly... they all pushed downward into a strange quasi-nihilism.  This does not comport with the tone of the first Avengers movie and I hope he doesn't take it down that path.

I still maintain that his atheism is his impediment to true greatness.  That is not to say that you cannot be an atheist and be a great writer.  Alan Moore is a genius writer, but his work on something like Watchmen is philosophically consistent.  In Watchmen, there is no ultimate Good, so the idea of being a hero is ridiculous.  But as pointed out in my Avengers film review, his atheism should tell us that heroism is meaningless, since the universe is meaningless.  But he believes in heroes nonetheless.  This metaphysical contradiction causes the latter part of his serial work to ring hollow.

But perhaps I'm being too hard on him.  He is a far better writer than most people out there.  But at the news that he is doing Avengers 2, I am mostly psyched and about 5% nervous.
