Trailer Time: The Orville: New Horizons

I am probably more excited for this show than I should be.

Star Trek has lost its way.  The show that best exemplifies what Star Trek: The Next Generation was is The Orville.

Granted that The Orville also has a large dose of strange humor from Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame.  The first season had its rough moments.  Particularly, the atheist MacFarlane goes out of his way in the early episodes to be very anti-religion.  But once he got that out of his system, he could focus just on good storytelling.

What I really like about The Orville is that it had the same appeal that Star Trek had in that it was sci-fi, but each week could be a different show.  One week it could be a war episode.  In another, it could exploring a new civilization.  In another it could be about interpersonal office politics or romance.  The Orville does this while slowly getting you to fall in love with its deeply flawed characters.  What's more, MacFarlane is able to seamlessly blend in his outrageous humor in a way that does not decrease the tension or drama, and that is no small feat.

The look of this new season on Hulu is fantastic.  Visually, it looks like everything improved.  My only worry is that now that the show is not on network TV, it will fall into the trap that Arrested Development did.  Arrested Development was one of the greatest sitcoms of all time in its short three-season run.  When it got a fourth season on Netflix, the lack of censorship caused the show to veer into some pretty disgusting territory and made that flawed, but loveable, family much less loveable.  I hope MacFarlane does not do the same to this great show.

What are your thoughts?
